Biography




Jacob Will made his New York Philharmonic debut as bass soloist in the American Premiere of the Messa per Rossini, a performance televised live nationwide. An experienced concert artist, Mr. Will has been featured with orchestras throughout the United States, Europe and Asia. He has appeared with the Sinfonica de Madrid in L’Enfance du Christ under the baton of Frühbeck de Burgos, the Berlin Radio Symphony in Das klagende Lied with Maestro Vladamir Ashkenazy and the Cabrillo Festival in the Beethoven Ninth with Maestro Dennis Russell Davies. Other engagements of note include appearances with the San Francisco Symphony in the St. Matthew Passion, the International Bach Festival of Schaffhausen, Switzerland in the St. John Passion, the Vienna Symphonic Orchestra in Frank Martin's Le mystère de la Nativité, and the Tokyo Salzburg Festival in Mozart’s Requiem. Commercial recordings include Cherubini’s Messe solennelle with Helmut Rilling, Zemlinsky’s Kleider Machen Leute with Ralf Weikert and Suter’s Le Laudi with Theo Loosli. Mr. Will has appeared regularly with the Carmel Bach Festival, performing as bass soloist in all of the major works of J. S. Bach as well as in numerous Bach cantatas and in operas such as Handel’s Imeneo and Mozart’s Nozze di Figaro (Figaro). Additional concert appearances include Mozart’s Requiem with the Anchorage Basically Bach Festival, Dvorak’s Stabat Mater with the Czech Philharmonic, Bach’s Mass in B Minor with the Los Angeles Master Chorale, Purcell’s King Arthur with Nicholas McGegan and the Philharmonia Baroque of Berkeley, the Brahms Requiem with the Sofia Philharmonic, the St John Passion with the Sacramento Symphony and Mozart’s Vesperae Solennes de Confessore with the Bern Sinfonieorchester.

Equally at home on stage, Mr. Will has performed frequently with the Zürich Opera, interpreting roles such as Giorgio in I Puritani, Mustafa in L'Italiana in Algeri, Ferrando in Il Trovatore, Sparafucile in Rigoletto, Sarastro in Die Zauberflöte, Basilio in Il Barbiere di Siviglia and Colline in La Boheme. He has also appeared as Oroveso in Norma with Vancouver Opera, the title role in Le Nozze di Figaro with New York City Opera, the First Nazarene in Salome with Barcelona’s Gran Teatre del Liceu, Masetto in Don Giovanni with the Festival de Musique de Strasbourg, Melchthal in Guillaume Tell with Grand Théâtre de Genève, the King of Scottland in Ariodante with Pfalztheater Kaiserslautern, Basilio in Barber of Seville with Anchorage Opera, Zuniga in Carmen with the Bregenzer Festspiele, Masetto in Don Giovanni with the San Francisco Opera, Samuel in Un Ballo in Maschera with the Bavarian Staatsoper, the Commendatore in Don Giovanni with Staatsoper Stuttgart, the Sprecher in Die Zauberflöte with Theater Basel, Raimondo in Lucia di Lammermoor with Stadttheater St Gallen, and as Leporello in Don Giovanni with the Selzacher Festspiele.

Mr. Will participated in the Merola and Adler Fellowship Programs of the San Francisco Opera and has been a prizewinner in various international singing competitions including the Munich Competition and the Queen Elizabeth Competition of Brussels. A native of Hartsville, SC, he is a faculty member at the Institute for Young Dramatic Voices and Professor of Voice at the University of South Carolina where he also serves as Associate Dean of Administration.
